New and Improved (!) Terrain and Landscape Representations in the Atlas of Yellowstone, Second Edition
Keywords: terrain, cartography, atlas, design, Yellowstone, science, communication
Abstract. Creating a second edition of the Atlas of Yellowstone ten years after the first edition provided opportunities to improve existing maps and create new ones using a variety of innovative terrain methodology techniques. These included creating shaded relief with Blender (an open-source 3D software); using illuminated contour shading; and the incorporation of satellite imagery and other environmental datasets to create maps that tell rich stories of the Yellowstone landscape. Thematic maps from the Atlas are used to discuss these techniques along with cartographic design considerations.
